Mission to Mars is a conceptual installation involving 3 bangles designed for the Museum of Extraordinary Objects, an experimental collaboration between the Royal Society and artists studying the MA Art and Science course at Central Saint Martins. The Museum comprises a series of artworks exploring the future of research culture.
It is the year 2035. Following the failed 2027 Mission to Mars, these bangles were marketed as memorials to celebrate and recognise the contributions of the Mars Mission Team who dedicated their lives to establishing a new community on the red planet. The mission provided vital information on interplanetary travel and disproved the 'Planet B' hypothesis, reinforcing the necessity for climate change research. Over the past decade, innovative research such as this Mission has liberated researchers from the burden of socioeconomic constraints and taboos around research failure. In this speculative future, failure in research, or unintended 'negative' outcomes, are welcomed and celebrated by the public for their value to societal progress.
